Understanding the oral microbiome
The oral microbiome is the complex ecosystem of bacteria and microorganisms living in the mouth. When balanced, it supports gum health, enamel protection and immune function. When disrupted, imbalances may be associated with inflammation, decay and periodontal conditions.
This test analyses:
- Bacterial diversity within the oral microbiome
- Relative abundance of key microbial groups
- Microbial patterns associated with oral inflammation and gum health
HOW THE TEST WORKS
1. Register
Before sending your sample, register your test kit here.
This step securely links your sample to your results.
2. Collect
Use the sterile saliva swab included in the kit. Collection takes under two minutes.
3. Return your sample
Send your sample to the laboratory using the prepaid return packaging.
4. Laboratory analysis
Your sample is analysed in a UK laboratory.
5. View your results
Once analysis is complete, your results are available through our secure portal, which you can access here.
Important:
Registration is required to receive your results. Samples that are not registered cannot be processed or reported.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE TEST
Analysis is performed in a UK laboratory using high resolution DNA sequencing techniques. This allows precise identification of bacterial species that cannot be detected through visual assessment or traditional culture-based methods.

WHO IS THE ORAL MICROBIOME TEST FOR?
Suitable for individuals who:
- Want deeper insight into their oral health

Not recommended if you:
- Have taken antibiotics within the last four weeks
- Have an active oral infection (testing should be delayed)
